ENZYME 2010 dates announced
That’s right music lovers! ENZYME is ON! See flyer below for dates.
Artists performing at the March event will be announced soon.

Sandpiper 1st Launch!
A wonderful hot Sunday morning, with minimal waves and a very light breeze was perfect for our first test sail in Half Moon Bay.
Rigging was a sinch, although we had to fiddle a bit to rake the mast to a decent angle, but once that was done we were off! I converted a $20 hand trolley into a simple beach trolley with the help of some closed-cell foam and carpet, which worked a treat to get down the slippery ramp.
Sorting out the rigging…

A quick pose for the camera before heading off…

Off off and away!

Initial observations:
I played with sailing at all angles to the wind and plenty of manouvering, and it can be honestly said that this little thing from the 70’s is going to be a bundle of laughs. Downwind even in light chop she death rolls like mad, so its going to be an interesting challenge when the wind picks up and the waves gain size! That said, there were no spills, and upwind and reaching is very good, and gybing is not so painful. The very small sail area, long mast, and very narrow waterline really make her a very fun challenge, and definately not for the faint hearted.
Only once did I need to shift my weight (55kg) out on a hike so she would certainly handle some very windy conditions when the time comes…. which is hopefully soon!
The new Mazda Familia Restoration Blog
The old blog telling largely of the restoration story is at http://dawnindustry.com/Familia/
The story will continue here at the Dawn Industry Blog!
Parked next to a new Mazda, for comparison. There is none! The old one is much more cute

Hull restoration complete
Below the waterline she was chalky, yellowing and had some deep scratching, respairs all completed!
Entire surface sanded and scratches filled with Gelcoat Repair:

And now finished with 6 coats of new white gloss and then a good hard polish and wax:

More pics coming soon, hopefully we will launch her this weekend and get some action pics
Some History
The previous owner mentioned that the boat is a Shand built hull, a fine boatbuilder here in Victoria, so I gave him a call last week to see what he knew about these boats (he is quite famous in the Flying 15 class). Lo-and-behold, he did actually build this one, and we had a great conversation about them.
Apartently they were first designed in Melbourne in the 70’s and at its strongest had a group of around 40 sailing. He mentioned the Sabot and Optimist class sailors used to line up at the beach after races were over to take one of these Sandpipers for a rip around Port Phillip bay, as they are very fast and nimble.
Hes provided a contact for the son of the original designer so will follow that up soon.
Also done some research to find the yardstick (handicap) for the class, and Yachting Victoria was very kind to reply with:
This class was Archived in 1982 with a figure in current values of 143. I would suggest using this figure as a starting point though it should be reviewed at a club level and my estimate is that it would initially increase by 1 to 3 points.
DEMUS compiled II CD out now!
DEMUS is proud to release a brand new, 2CDR set of underground and independent music from around the world! There are not many copies remaining from this short run so get yours now from DARK STEREO.
The Sandpiper
This blog category is the ongoing story of a poor little 1970’s sailing dinghy which we have rescued and are making seaworthy again. Very little is known about this class of boat but slowly we are making progress.
Anyway, before the story begins here are some pics of her, an 11ft, Shand built (more on that later) self draining retro rocket ship in need of some love!

Enzyme shall live again in 2010
That’s right folks, the ENZYME Melbourne underground music event will continue this year, confirmed dates coming soon! Artists interested in performing please contact us.
